What's going on at Tin Drum Studio

October 2009: I am doing a second ad with Amaco. This ad will feature my utilitarian wares and is scheduled to appear in the food issue of PMI and future issues of CM. I will do an ad for Kentucky Mudworks sometime this fall as well. KM is a local ceramic supply company that produces their own line of high quality cone 6 glazes.

Septemeber 2009: I am on the cover for a feature article in the upcoming September/October issue of Pottery Making Illustrated -- available now! The focus of this issue is surface. In my article, I discuss how I construct my teapot forms as well as how I develop my surfaces. Also, I stress upon the reader approaches to help them find their own voice in clay. The written piece will have an accompanying video that the reader will have access to on ceramicartsdaily.org, which is the website for Pottery Making Illustrated and Ceramics Monthly. This is the first time that PMI has combined video and the web with the written word. I am excited to be the first in this experiment. I hope that everyone has a great fall!

August 2009: Life sure has changed. It is now much harder to produce the same amount of work I was producing before. I do think that the quality of my new porcelain series far surpasses my earthenware series. This summer I have been making work in this new series trying to resupply the dwindling inventories at all my galleries. I do appreciate everyone's patience. You can view images of that new series on my portfolio page.

July 2009: I was awarded the Kentucky Arts Council Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship. The fellowship is awarded to outstanding Kentucky visual and media artist to assist in their continuing artistic development. I am planning on using the funding to help in my research.

May 2009: My work has been included in Lark Book's 500 Ceramic Sculptures edited by Suzanne J E Tourtillott & Julie Halethe and juried by critic/historian Glen R. Brown.

April 2009: I am participating in shows at AKAR and in June a show at the Red Lodge Clay Center and this August I will be featured in a three person exhibition at the Northern Clay Center.

January 2009: My world has turned -- I'm a father!

December 28: After almost a year and many test firings, I have finally resolved the developmental phase of my new porcelain series and am truly pleased and excited about its potential. I have trickled a few pieces out to three galleries and early response has been quite positive! I will unveil this new series during AKAR's Yunomi Invitational, which opens online March 27th. October 17: "Surface, Form and Substance" was a great event -- I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to present there. I enjoyed meeting the other presenters and so many supportive participants. It's hard to believe a month has passed since the workshop. This last month, I have been keeping busy finishing up work for three upcoming holiday exhibitions at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, November 7 - December 28; The Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, November 16-January 4; and LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska, November 7-December 23. Next month is sure to fly by just as quickly!

September 12: I truly had a great time at the Northern Clay Center’s American Pottery Festival last weekend! It was a real thrill meeting all the other artists and collectors. I even got to meet and briefly hang out with Ron Meyers and Warren Mackenzie! The staff at NCC organized a flawless event!

This coming week looks to be very busy also. I am going to Indianapolis to present a workshop at the sold out Potters Council conference “Surface, Form and Substance”. While there, I will be filmed for a CeramicsArtsDaily.org video segment, photographed for an Amaco ad, and interviewed for a PBS series on North American crafts. The accompanying exhibition opens that Friday. Other artists presenting at the conference include Eva Kwong, Lana Wilson, Debra Fritts, Susan Kemenyffy, and Ovidio Giberga. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

August 23: A few weeks ago, I wrote a short piece for ceramicartsdaily.org entitled “Building up Luminescent Surfaces with Commercial Underglazes”, click here for the article . The focus of the piece is to encourage readers to find their own voice through the development of new approaches or techniques in clay. I also touch upon my process for developing surface, which makes it a great preview for my upcoming workshop at the Potters Council Conference “Surface, Form & Substance” being held in Indianapolis, IN – September 19-21. Other presenters include Lana Wilson, Eva Kwong, Susan Kemenyffy, Debra Fritts, and Ovidio Giberga. It looks to be a great event!
