Teaching Philosophy

DOCENDO DISCIMUS
We learn by teaching

Being an artist is hard work. Therefore, students need opportunities to develop strong foundations in the processes needed to succeed in an art career. I achieve this by designing assignments that blend classical training with creative problem solving. The goal of teaching any art is to design course work that teaches technique while encouraging independent, creative thought.

I expect students to begin by mastering basic techniques especially with technically challenging materials such as ceramics, glass, and cast metals. Once this has been accomplished, students can then branch out into more conceptual work with freedom and confidence. It is also important that students develop their own methodologies, because when students understand the science of art, it changes their perception of art making from a playful exercise into an intellectual process.

Since not every student learns or acquires information in the same way, I combine a variety of teaching methods and presentation techniques to better meet individual student needs. I attempt to address individual learning styles through a variety of means: demonstrations, group and individual critiques, required readings and handouts, and slide or PowerPoint presentations. In this way, every student has the opportunity to develop to his or her full potential.

One of my goals as an instructor is to mentor students by providing the support, encouragement, and assistance needed for their success. As an instructor, I am a guide to help students develop naturally without allowing my personal aesthetics to bias their individual artistic visions. As an exhibiting artist, I am a role model for those students majoring in the fine arts. I give students insight into the gallery system as well as a glimpse into the realities of being a professional artist, information they can use to build their own careers after graduation.

One of my personal goals when working with students is to remember what it was like to be a student myself. Remembering the struggles and successes of my own undergraduate years keeps me grounded and helps me adjust my teaching to meet each student's individual needs. It also helps me to challenge and engage students without overwhelming them.

I take teaching art very seriously. My foremost goal is to increase art literacy and understanding by designing courses and programs that educate and inspire.
